Introducing the Sleep/Wake Button - Honours Blog 43

Updated: May 11, 2020

Finally! After all the development, issues, and redevelopment, I have finally finished the design of the sleep/wake button. The button itself isn't much, but its the part of the product that the user will have the most interaction with. The sleep/wake button is there in case the rider wants to turn off any alerts from the HUD. Sometimes, getting caught in blind spots are inevitable, and if the rider is stuck in a high-pressure situation while the HUD is lit up, it runs the risk of becoming distracting. To prevent this, the user can 'sleep' the notifications from the HUD (the bike kit still registers them) and can wake them again once clear of any distractions.

The button is designed to be as slim as possible, allowing it to be fitted onto most spots of the handlebars of a motorbike. The technology inside the button is pretty basic compared to the other two-component, as it only houses a push button. The plan is that the button will be wired directly into the bike kit so that any response from the button can be quickly registered.

The button has been designed to fit almost every motorbike handlebar (except oversize). If the button does happen to be too big, however, it will be supplied with a simple rubber ring to slot between the bar and the button, filling up any extra room. Like the bike kit and most of the HUD, the button will mostly be manufactured out of injection moulded ABS plastic. However, since this is the part of the product that the user will have the most interaction with, a simple brushed aluminium casing has been added around the button, giving the feeling of a robust, high-quality finished product.

And there we have it! That's the Sleep/Wake button. Overall I'm pretty pleased with how this part has turned out, despite all the challenges presented along the way. I'm pretty disappointed that I never got the chance to make it real, but given everything going on at the moment I'm still happy with what I've got.
